2008 Mock Draft Database
Site 1st Rnd Pick Pos. Ht. Wt. College Pick Assessment
NFL Draft Countdown - (Updated 1/18) Mario Manningham WR 6-0 178 Michigan Their Take - "Picking this low after such an awful season must be a tough pill to swallow but that is reason #1,567,811 why you should think long and hard about trading away those future #1's. With that said landing a great talent like Mario Manningham should help take the sting off it and he is exactly the type of playmaker this franchise needs on offense. He may have a slight frame but Manningham knows how to stretch the field vertically and get in the endzone and you just know new offensive coordinator Mike Martz will be angling for a weapon like that. This one certainly feels like a perfect fit."

WalterFootball.com - (Updated 1/21) Limas Sweed WR 6-4 220 Texas Their Take - "The 49ers were the sexy sleeper pick this offseason. So, what happened? Frank Gore's injury played a factor. As did Alex Smith's ineptness. And don't forget the disappointing $100 million secondary. However, what hindered the team most has been its offensive line and receiving corps. When the 49ers traded a fourth-round pick for Darrell Jackson, I don't think they anticipated that their new wide out would drop about 10 passes per week. In 15 games, Jackson had only 497 receiving yards."

Draft King - (Updated 1/25) James Hardy WR 6-6 220 Indiana Their Take - "The 49ers have been in a free-fall, in no small part because of the team's inability to throw the ball -- they were dead last in passing yards per game in 2007. The receiving corps is a mess, and with Mike Martz coming on board as the new offensive coordinator, it seems quite likely that the 49ers will use their first round pick on a receiver. Hardy is 6'6" and can run a sub 4.6 40. He could do some amazing things in a Mike Martz offense."

Rivals.com - (Updated 1/18) Early Doucet WR 6-0 207 LSU Their Take - "The 49ers offense needs to upgrade their weak receiving corps if Alex Smith is too ever to realize his pro potential."

FF Toolbox - (Updated 1/23) Mario Manningham WR 6-0 178 Michigan Their Take - "Alex Smith took a big step back in his development even before being sidelined with an injury, and it's obvious Frank Gore needs some help as well. Simply put the 49ers' offense stunk this season. Manning can stretch the field vertically and that's exactly what the doctor ordered for San Francisco."

NFL Draft Blitz - (Updated 1/15) James Hardy WR 6-6 220 Indiana Big man who's considered a project. A good combine could see him move up even further given that he's 6'6. Not sure if I want a project receiver right now. -- Fooch
About.com:Football - (Updated 12/24) Mario Manningham WR 6-0 178 Michigan I'm sensing a theme. I'm awaiting a scouting report on Manningham from maizenbrew.com, our Michigan blog. Judgment waits till then. -- Fooch

NFL Mock Draft 2008 - (Updated 12/22) Gosder Cherilus OT 6-3 233 Boston College The 49ers could use some o-line help, but I think there might be better options on the board (Carl Nicks, Barry Richardson). -- Fooch

Draft Dog - (Updated 1/25) Chris Williams OT 6-6 315 Vanderbilt Their Take -- From Indianapolis: The Niner's line really struggled this year. Williams (6' 5" 320 lbs) could hold the left tackle slot. RT Joe Staley was inconsistent as a rookie. (I don't buy this reasoning)

Don Banks - SI - (Updated 1/18) Keith Rivers OLB 6-3 236 USC Their Take - "The 49ers would love to land a first-round receiver, an offensive tackle or a pass rusher, but they're all gone down this far in the round. Rivers isn't a bad consolation prize. He's athletic, has a great motor, and had a leading role in playing for an ultra-successful program."

The Football Expert - (Updated 1/20) Mario Manningham WR 6-0 178 Michigan The votes for Cashmere keep on coming in. Not really feeling it for now, but maybe Maizenbrew Dave's scouting report will bring me around to it. -- Fooch

DraftTek - (Updated 1/21) James Hardy OT 6-6 220 Indiana Lather, Rinse, Repeat -- Fooch

My NFL Draft - (Updated 1/23) Early Doucet WR 6-0 207 LSU He's shown up enough to warrant some more scouting info. Like Sweed, I think he's gone at this point, but you never know. -- Fooch

Todd McShay(ESPN) - (Updated 1/23) James Hardy WR 6-6 220 Indiana Their Take - "The 49ers need a playmaker at wide receiver to take the attention away from TE Vernon Davis and some pressure off QB Alex Smith. And although Hardy comes with some baggage and he needs some polishing, no receiver in this class possesses a more imposing combination of size and natural athleticism."/i>

NFL Draft Max - (Updated 1/18) Adarius Bowman WR 6-4 220 Oklahoma St. OSU produced RW McQuarters and Rashaun Woods. Third time's a charm? -- Fooch

The Captain's Deck - (Updated 1/14) Early Doucet WR 6-0 207 LSU Doucet hasn't exactly set the world on fire, but he seems a safer pick than Hardy or Manningham (although I think Hardy has more upside) -- Fooch

NFL Draft Guys - (Updated 1/16) Felix Jones RB 6-0 200 Arkansas Their Take - "San Francisco's offense ranks dead last in several offensive categories. Yes, they have Frank Gore, but after a down year and the emergence of the two back system in the NFL, Jones is a great compliment to Gore." My Take - I could see the value of another running back, but I just think there are too many other areas of need to spend a first rounder on a luxury.

Draft Daddy - (Updated 1/18) Mario Manningham WR 6-0 178 Michigan I think Manningham's stock takes a dive like Dwayne Jarrett last year -- Fooch

Draft 32 - (Updated 1/21) Quentin Groves DE/3-4 OLB 6-3 254 Auburn Their Take - "With Bryant Young's retirement, the 49ers will need to address the defensive line immediately. With linebacker also a need, Groves seems like the logical fit."

Junkyard Jake - (Updated 1/25) Kentwan Balmer DT 6-5 288 North Carolina Their Take - "Had terrific senior season, with 9.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. Ideal size for DT position and good run-stuffer."

Fantasy Football Xtreme - (Updated 1/25) Limas Sweed WR 6-4 220 Texas I really don't see Sweed falling to us at the end of the first round. He'd need a poor combine showing or some red flags to pop up -- Fooch

Cowboy Pride - (Updated 1/2) Mario Urrutia WR 6-6 228 Louisville Another big receiver. The size makes these types of guys tempting but I definitely want to find out more. Consider him added to the list for scouting reports. -- TSG

Consensus Draft Services - (Updated 1/25) Adarius Bowman WR 6-4 220 Oklahoma State Their Take - This pick goes to the Niners from the Colts. San Francisco needs a pass-rushing threat at OLB to complement Manny Lawson, but that can wait until the later rounds. Darrell Jackson was incredibly disappointing, in large part due to the regression of QB Alex Smith. Adding another WR is a possibility, and Adarius Bowman of Oklahoma State is a polished Anquan Boldin-type player with good strength and toughness. Not the fastest player, Bowman has good hands, but his final draft position could really hinge on his postseason performance.

Sports City - (Updated 1/22) Early Doucet WR 6-0 207 LSU New Era projects him as best case Hines Ward, worst case Troy Williamson...that's quite the range -- Fooch

Fantasy Football Jungle - (Updated 1/22) Malcolm Kelly WR 6-4 217 Oklahoma Their Take - "The 49ers trading their 1st round draft pick for OT J. Staley last year was a good idea, but putting Staley, who was barely 300 lbs. and ran under a 4.8 at RT was not. That along with many other questionable moves last offseason (new off. coordinator, A. Lelie, etc.) resulted in an awful offense. One of the steps to correcting it will be improving their receiving core and Kelly will definely do that. Kelly has great size, hands and natural body control. He's still raw and doesn't have great speed which is why he will likely still be available at this spot."

Draft Season - (Updated 1/23) Patrick Sims DT 6-4 310 Auburn Their Take - "The 49ers are looking for a run stuffing defensive tackle for the middle of their 3-4 defense. Sims has the ideal build for that, and he would allow Willis to roam free and create even more havoc."

Phin Fever - (Updated 1/20) Patrick Sims DT 6-4 310 Auburn Their Take - "The Niners need a Receiver, which they can get with their early second rounder. If they end up needing a Nose Tackle, there isn’t any use in taking chances and letting Sims get by them. Sims really came on towards the end of the year as he was finally realizing his potential."

Sports Fountainhead - (Updated 1/20) James Hardy WR 6-6 220 Indiana Their Take - "The 49ers need a big play WR and the best prospects are already gone (Jackson, Kelly, Sweed). Hardy has the tools to be a force in the NFL. He isn’t as fast as you would like but his build and hands may lead to a big career (if he can keep out of trouble). Terrell Owens, take two?"

Inside The Eagles - (Updated 1/25) Malcolm Kelly WR 6-4 217 Oklahoma As his name creeps into the picture he sounds like an interesting option at receiver. However, I'm starting to think the 49ers could go DL or OL here and still get a solid receiver with their 2nd round pick. -- Fooch

The Landry Hat - (Updated 1/14) Chris Williams OT 6-6 315 Vanderbilt Their Take - "The 49ers must open holes for Frank Gore.Williams is the best left to help do that."

New NFL Draft - (Updated 1/8) James Hardy WR 6-6 220 Indiana Their Take - "The 49ers offense was very weak this year and solely relied on Frank Gore to carry the team. Alex Smith needs some more weapons to work with and James Hardy is the perfect player to draft to help a QB move forward in the passing game. Hardy is a very tall receiver with great hands."

East Coast Sports - (Updated 1/25) Kentwan Balmer DT 6-5 288 North Carolina Their Take - "The Niners would like an OT like Cherilus to fall to them here, but since he's gone they take Balmer who will play End in their 3-4 scheme...the team will target WR's like Eddie Royal and Harry Douglas with their other picks and Isaac Bruce in FA to teach them the ropes."

The Huddle Report - (Updated 1/19) Devin Thomas WR 6-3 220 Michigan St. Hmmm. First time I've seen this name, although he finished with 79 receptions, 1,260 yards. Might have to look into him a little more although he doesn't appear to be projected as a first rounder in many mocks. -- Fooch

The Football Expert(Donnelly) - (Updated 1/20) Mario Manningham WR 6-0 178 Michigan Their Take -- "Trading their top pick works out about as well as it could have as they are able to steal Super Mario at 30. A good value and a guy who plays bigger than he is should help boost some morale out west after a disappointing season."

The Football Expert(Abromowitz) - (Updated 1/20) Mario Manningham WR 6-0 178 Michigan Their Take -- "The 49ers have yet to fine their big threat receiver. Manningham is that big threat, vertical receiver the 49ers need and more importantly Alex Smith needs. Manningham needs to bulk up some more, and lacks ideal height at 6-0, but he is a playmaker, and something to help give Vernon Davis more looks at in the middle."

The Football Expert(Cox) - (Updated 1/25) Dan Connor LB 6-3 233 Penn St. Their Take - "The 49ers don’t have holes so much as mediocre players filling a lot of positions. That makes it harder to predict where they will go. I believe there is enough developing youth on their offensive line (Snyder, Baas and Staley) for them to pass on that early in this draft. It is hard to fault them for stopping the slide of a quality linebacker out of a college known for producing them."

The Football Expert(Eide) - (Updated 1/20) Early Doucet WR 6-0 207 LSU Their Take - "The 49ers receiving corps looked as though it would be vastly improved heading into 2007 but failed to meet expectations. Darrell Jackson is old and can’t catch, Ashley Lelie was maybe the worst free agent signing of ’07 and Arnaz Battle should not be anyone a QB should be forced to rely on. Doucet missed five games this year because of injury but came within two catches of setting his career high and averaged six receptions a game. The 49ers need consistency in their passing game more than anything else and Doucet delivers."

Mel Kiper(ESPN.com) - (Updated 1/22) James Hardy WR 6-6 220 Indiana The mightily coiffed one annoints the big, bad Hardy as the 49ers first rounder. I'm curious what kind of roller coaster this kid's stock is on over the next 3 months. -- Fooch

Draft.com - (Updated 1/22) Sam Baker OT 6-5 305 USC I've seen Baker mostly going in the high teens, so I'm not holding my breath for him here -- Fooch

Inside The Iggles - (Updated 1/22) Kentwan Balmer DT 6-5 288 North Carolina Their Take - "Still trying make the transition to a 3-4 defense, the Niners grab a very good defensive lineman here. He is capable of playing in either a 4-3 or 3-4 formation. Bryant Young is not getting any younger, and the Niners need to sure up the defensive front seven."

C-Web is back

got it here...http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3219421

Chris Webber told ESPN.com on Monday night that he will arrive in Oakland on Tuesday to officially re-join the Golden State Warriors and play again for Don Nelson.

"I'll be there tomorrow," Webber said via e-mail. "It's a done deal."

Chris Webber

Webber

Webber has signed for a pro-rated share of the league's $1.2 million veteran minimum, which computes to just under $570,000 if he stays with Golden State to the end of the regular season. But he won't hook up with his new teammates before Thursday at the earliest.

Although the club is scheduled to formally announce the signing Tuesday after the 34-year-old completes a physical, Golden State plays road games in Houston and New Orleans on Tuesday and Wednesday. The soonest Webber might play would be Friday's home game against the Charlotte Bobcats -- which is also a homecoming for longtime Warriors guard Jason Richardson -- but Nelson could elect to give Webber more time to get acclimated. The Warriors have five days off for practices after the Charlotte game.

When asked to elaborate on a reunion that's arguably even more unlikely than the brief stint Penny Hardaway completed with Shaquille O'Neal's Miami Heat earlier this season, Webber said he would speak at length about his decision later this week.

But this brief proclamation to confirm that he's returning to the team and city where he began his NBA career in 1993 -- and where he lasted only one season because of a fast-crumbling relationship with Nelson -- will be sufficiently stunning to longtime Warriors fans who believe that the breakdown of the initial Webber-Nelson partnership plunged Golden State into more than a decade of despair.

Before Nelson's own surprising and triumphant return to Oakland last season, which resulted in an immediate trip to the playoffs and a historic first-round upset of the 67-win Dallas Mavericks, Golden State hadn't reached the postseason since going 50-32 in 1993-94. That was Webber's first and only season as a Warrior, but the honeymoon was one of the shortest ever seen in the league. Some six months after winning NBA Rookie of the Year honors, Webber forced a trade to Washington to get away from Nelson, who was ousted as Warriors coach and general manager soon after.

But Nelson has been warmly welcomed back to the Bay Area by the Warriors' rabid fans in spite of the initial perception that he chased off one of the most talented players in franchise history. Nelson has fronted Golden State's unlikely push to bring him back and has maintained that he and Webber reconciled years ago, when he chose Webber to replace the injured O'Neal -- over Dirk Nowitzki from Nelson's Mavericks -- as the West's starting center for the 2002 All-Star Game in Philadelphia.

Although there is widespread skepticism regarding Webber's ability to keep up with Nelson's run-and-gunners -- given the mobility issues that have hampered the 34-year-old since a serious knee injury in the 2003 playoffs and subsequent microfracture surgery -- Nelson insists that the Warriors need Webber's passing and midrange game to get them unstuck when the game slows down or their countless 3-pointers aren't dropping.

Nelson and Warriors vice president of basketball operations Chris Mullin -- one of Webber's teammates during his solitary season in Golden State -- have likewise expressed confidence that the 67-year-old coach and Webber are ready for this seemingly hard-to-fathom reunion after numerous conversations in recent days.

"I'm afraid if we don't get him here [that] our team is not strong enough to be a playoff team," Nelson said. "That's my biggest fear. I think if he comes it can benefit our team, it can benefit his and my relationship, it can benefit players on this team. I think he has a chance to make some of our players better and make our team better. Really that's all that's important. I'll get along with anybody who can help our team."

Herbal Nutrition Center, 1435 S. La Cienega Blvd. Suite G, Mid-Wilshire; 310.855.9484

Most of your essentials are already distributed by vending machines: condoms, electronics, luscious 1-calorie Tab... But now, you can finally get what you really need: medical marijuana, from Anytime Vending Machines.

Thrillist - Anytime Vending MachinesAVMs are 24/7 machines housed in standalone rooms, abutting two dispensaries and protected by round-the-clock security guards -- like ATMs for people combating psychological withdrawal with a physical one. After cinching up your doctor's consultation, hit an AVM location to get your prescription approved, fingerprint taken, and a prepaid credit card loaded with your profile: dosage (3.5 or 7 grams, up to 1oz a week) and strain preference (choice of five, including OG Cush and Granddaddy Purple, the mildly hallucinogenic forebear to Prince). Then day or night, all you do is hit a machine and walk away with enough vacuum-sealed, plastic-encapsulated cheeba to adequately treat your illness, and guarantee your car never smells like new leather again.

The AVMs are already in place at their respective dispensaries and will be fully-operational by Monday, though their vestibules are still under construction; future plans include machine-vended pharmaceuticals like Vicodin, Viagra, and Propecia -- for when the excessive chemicals in Tab have wracked you with pain, limpness, and baldness

Is Cweb coming back to the GSW

Found it here...http://www.sacbee.com/100/story/657920.html
It just a rumor though..But who know..maybe

Marty Mac's World: Nelson, Webber to reunite?
Martin McNeal - mmcneal@sacbee.com

Word on the street says Golden State Warriors coach Don Nelson has been seen at Chris Webber's Natomas restaurant, Center Court with C-Webb, twice recently. That only could mean Webber and Nelson are considering the completion of the ultimate full circle and a Webber return to Golden State.

They beefed big-time 14 years ago while both were with the Warriors, but perhaps it is true that time heals all wounds, even gashes.

Stay tuned. With agent Aaron Goodwin representing Gary Payton as well as Webber, could the former Skyline High School (Oakland) guard be far behind? Baron Davis, one of the league's best point guards, needs rest, and Payton surely could fill that backup role.

Niners pick #29

Sunday, January 20, 2008

http://www.49erswebzone.com/forum/thread.php?num=89380

NE and the NYG have advanced to the Super Bowl, putting the Colts in the 29th slot.

The Niners will select 29th in the first round, 39th in the second, and 70th in the third.

The first round has 31 picks, with the Pats forfeiting their own selection.

Tied at 5-11 with the Ravens, the Niners alternate ahead and behind the Ravens with each round. In the first, the Niners would have selected before the Ravens, at number 7, but the Pats have our pick. The Ravens select 8th overall.

In the second round, the Ravens select before us, in the 38th overall slot. The Niners will select 39th.

In the third round, the Niners rotate ahead of the Ravens. The Niners will select 70th, and the Ravens 71st.

Most drafts have about 2 or 3 compensatory selections at the end of the 3rd round. Expect the Niners' fourth rounder to be right around the 106th slot.

5 million and some change for a super rare car...

Beside..My 49ers,Gear,Money,Music and Kicks..I also love Cars..Cars..Cars. Here's a youtube clip of a rare cobra that went for major bucks. Kudos too Luis(coworker) for showing me the link...

On September 7, 1965 CSX 3015 was shipped and invoiced to Ford Advanced Vehicles and sometime early to mid 1967, Carroll Shelby transformed CSX 3015 into the 'Super Snake' - one of the most impressive automobiles ever built.

The Super Snake has a monstrous 427cid, 800hp twin Paxton supercharged V8 with a super three-speed automatic transmission. In addition to use as his personal automobile, Shelby drove the Cobra in a running of the "Turismos Visitadores" in Nevada. In February 1968, Road & Track referred to CSX3015 as ''The Cobra to End All Cobras.''

As history shows, CSX 3015 is one of two Super Snake Cobras built. The other being CSX 3303 built for Bill Cosby. Sadly, it's next owner estroyed himself and CSX 3303 by driving off of a cliff and into the Pacific Ocean. CSX 3015 is a full Competition Roadster, still retaining its original body with its 1967 aluminum 'Super Snake' hood.

Carroll Shelby's personal 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Supersnake (Lot #1301), which was designed and built solely for the racing legend, was sold with No Reserve during the 36th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event from Jan. 13-21, 2007, in Scottsdale, Ariz. It fetched a record $5.5 million plus comission.

Wondering what # the 49ers will pick in the draft...

Draft update: The 49ers will draft either 28, 29, 30 or 31 in the first round of the April draft. The 49ers do not have their own first-round draft pick. They own the Colts' pick. If the Colts win the Super Bowl, the 49ers will pick No. 31. If the Colts lose the Super Bowl, the 49ers will pick 30th. If the Colts do not make the Super Bowl but the Patriots make it that far, the 49ers will pick 29th. However, if the Colts lose tomorrow, and then the Chargers beat the Patriots in the AFC Championship game, the 49ers would pick No. 28.

Got this from here..http://www.49erswebzone.com/content/news/view.php?id=12980

I like to introduce you to our new OC for the Niners.......

Tuesday, January 8, 2008

(01-08) 14:36 PST -- Mike Nolan's search for a new offensive coordinator was a short one as the 49ers' coach hired Mike Martz this afternoon to resurrect what was the worst offense in the NFL in 2007.

Martz, 56, replaces Jim Hostler, whose stint as offensive coordinator was one and done after the 49ers scored the fewest points and generated the fewest yards in the league.

The 49ers scheduled a 5 p.m. conference call with the two Mikes to discuss the hire.

"Our players are accustomed to and deserve strong leadership and competency," Nolan said in a statement. "The addition of Mike Martz as offensive coordinator gives our players both. Mike is an accomplished and highly successful offensive coach who has had great success with individuals and entire offenses. I believe the addition of Mike will affect our offense and entire team in a positive way."

Nolan interviewed former Dallas Cowboys and Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey on Saturday and met with Martz on Sunday. Hiring Martz means Nolan never got to two other offensive coordinator candidates on his list, Brian Billick and Cam Cameron, both fired as head coaches this season, Billick in Baltimore and Cameron in Miami.

One of Martz's jobs as offensive coordinator in 2008 will be to rebuild the career, and confidence, of quarterback Alex Smith, whose right shoulder and reputation took a beating this season. Smith was limited to seven games this season and completed only 48.7 percent of his passes.

According to Nolan, Smith will have to compete with Shaun Hill, provided he is re-signed, for the starting job next season.

Martz, known as an offensive mastermind with a sizable ego, spent the last two seasons in Detroit as offensive coordinator on Rod Marinelli's staff. With a preference for moving the ball through the air, the Lions were ranked ninth in passing in the NFL this season.

Overall, the Lions averaged 322.8 yards per game in 2007, substantially better than San Francisco's league-worst 237.3. Detroit was smack-dab in the middle of the league in scoring at 16th.

Before Detroit, Martz had been head coach of the St. Louis Rams from 2000-05 and was offensive coordinator on their Super Bowl-winning team in 1999. Under Martz, the Rams' offense was known as the "The Greatest Show on Turf" with such players as quarterback Kurt Warner, running back Marshall Faulk and wide receivers Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt.

From 1999-2001, the Rams became the first team in NFL history to score more than 500 points in three consecutive seasons.

Martz missed the last 11 games of the 2005 season with a heart ailment.

Coordinator Candidates

First, the news: Patrick Willis is expected to be named Defensive Rookie of the Year by the Associated Press probably tomorrow. Willis, who also won Defensive Player for the month for December, led the league in tackles with 174 tackles, 33 more than Denver's D.J. Williams, who finished in second.

Patrick Willis - More accolades coming.

Patrick Willis - More accolades coming.

The 49ers might also find out tonight whether they will coach the Senior Bowl for the third straight year. A dubious distinction because coaching the game is offered to the coaching staffs of the teams with the worst records. No assistant coaches were seen cleaning out their offices in Santa Clara today.

On the offensive coordinator front, the stated criteria is an experienced NFL play caller who's had success. Here are some candidates

:

Cam Cameron - The just-fired Dolphins coach steered the Chargers offense for five years and helped develope Drew Brees and Philip Rivers. Even those who watched the 1-15 Dolphins this past year, said Cameron's play-calling was solid. Cameron is from the Norv Turner digital system, which the 49ers currently employ. From a logical standpoint, Cameron's the top candidate. His most impressive feat: Getting Gus Frerotte to the Pro Bowl in 1996 as the Redskins quarterbacks coach.

Cam Cameron - Could this man be the next 49ers' OC?

Brian Billick - The long-time Ravens coach won a Super Bowl in Baltimore in 2000. What's surprising was his lack of establishing a decent offensive team in Baltimore after emerging from the Vikings as a historically successful offensive coordinator with Minnesota. The 556 points the Vikings scored in 1998 under Billick was an NFL record until the Patriots broke it this year. Mike Nolan worked for him and Billick was drafted by the 49ers in 1977 as a lanky tight end. He has been exposed to Bill Walsh's coaching and even worked as a assistant public relations director for the 49ers. But has Billick lost his offensive touch? He was unable to develop former Cal quarterback Kyle Boller, who was a first-round pick. Could he turn the trick with Alex Smith?

Mike Martz - He's certainly had success, none more than his complete turnaround of the St. Louis Rams from a 4-12 team in 1998 to 13-3 and Super Bowl Champions the next year as the offensive coordinator. He has developed Kurt Warner and Marc Bulger and has connections to California after working as an assistant for San Jose State (1975) Fresno State (1979) and UOP (1980-81). He's another discipile of the Don Coryell's digital system adopted by Norv Turner. He clashed with Detroit head coach Rod Marinelli, who wanted Martz to use the running game more. Martz has a reputation for establishing explosive passing game but can be abrasive and sometimes ignores the running game. He also wants to establish his passing game regardless of a team's ability to pass protection, which can lead to punishment of the quarterback.

Chan Gailey - He was fired by Georgia Tech after the season, after never losing over five games in one seasons with Tech. Athletic Director Dan Radakovich said Gailey had lost the fan base and didn't excite influential alumni despite his success, which included a string of bowl game appearances. The former Cowboys coach has been a coordinator for the Dolphins and Broncos and is adherent of a balanced approach, which includes a strong running game. He and Nolan coached in Denver at the same time in the late 1980's.

Bill Callahan - The former Raiders head coach failed in a football powerhouse Nebraska and was fired. After taking the Oakland to the Super in succeeding the popular Jon Gruden, Callahan was run out of Oakland after alienating and blaming players for the team's collapse after the Super Bowl season of 2002. In that season, the Raiders led the league in passing and total offense. The one-time offensive line coach is also known for coaching pass protection. The Raiders set marks in fewest sacks (27) in 2000 and (28) in 2002 when Callahan was the offensive coordinator.

Marty Mornhinweg - This won't happen. Mornhinweg is already the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the Eagles and probably wouldn't leave that job to coach for Mike Nolan. Nevertheless, Mornhinweg disastrous experience as the Lions head coach shouldn't marr his excellence as a offensive play caller. Steve Young calls him the best game-day offensive coordinator around, right up there with Mike Shanahan. Morhninweg also helped develop Jeff Garcia when he coordinated the 49ers' offense from 1997-2000.

Jim Fassel - He was with Nolan in Baltimore as an offensive consultant. Fassel has done some great resurrecting over the years, including guiding the Giants to the Super Bowl with Kerry Collins at quarterback in 2000 after a 7-9 season in 1999. His last reclaimation project - trying to revive the Ravens offense in 2004-5 - failed. He has been out of football for two years and served as a NFL commentator on radio. He's an adherent of the West Coast offense.
