49ers cut ties with Jennings

The 49ers have terminated the contract of Jonas Jennings, the oft-injured offensive tackle who was the team's big, free-agent prize in 2005. Jennings was never healthy in four seasons with the Buffalo Bills. But he commanded a $36 million contract from the 49ers, who belived he would be the anchor of a rebuilt offensive line at left tackle. Jennings played well when healthy. However, he suffered an array of injuries over the last four seasons, ranging from ankle sprains to being poked in the larynx. Jennings missed 41 of 64 potential starts during his time as a 49er.

Jennings's most troublesome injuries were three seperate dislocations to his right shoulder. The most recent occurred this past season in a Week Two game against the Seahawks. He was placed on injured reserve in November, ending his season. At the time, a frustrated Jennings wondered if he'd ever play again. Jennings' release comes as the 49ers are considering another talented tackle with an injury history, Marvel Smith. If Smith is signed, he likely will start the 2009 season where Jennings was in 2008 -- at right tackle.

The San Francisco 49ers aren’t expected to pursue veteran quarterback Jeff Garcia, according to Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat.

Per the article, 49ers coach Mike Singletary doesn’t sound interested in the unrestricted free agent.

“When I look at Shaun Hill, I think he did a great job last year,” Singletary said. “I’m not sure how much better we get by bringing in a Jeff Garcia and adding to the mix when you have a guy like Shaun Hill.”

Maiocco theorizes that the 49ers have “reason” to be interested in disgruntled Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler, also noting that the team may try to add a quarterback through the draft. Yet, he doesn’t think they will use the tenth overall pick of the first round on a quarterback.

The 49ers recently agreed to a restructured contract with former top overall pick Alex Smith.

Mexico's most wanted man, Joaquín Guzmán Loera, is one of 38 new billionaires.

For eight years Joaquín Guzmán Loera reportedly managed his international drug smuggling operation from behind bars while enjoying a lavish prison life with access to booze, women and a home entertainment system. Then in January 2001, facing extradition to the U.S., Guzmán slipped into a laundry cart and escaped.

Since then "El Chapo," or Shorty, as he is called, has tightened his grip on Mexico's drug trade as head of the Sinaloa cartel, one of the biggest suppliers of cocaine to the U.S. It is a lucrative business to be in these days. Thirty-five million people in the U.S. use narcotics or abuse prescription drugs, spending more than $64 billion annually. The Drug Enforcement Agency and other industry experts believe Guzmán, 54, has controlled anywhere from a third to half of the wholesale Mexican drug market over the past eight years. In 2008 Mexican and Colombian traffickers laundered between $18 billion and $39 billion in proceeds from wholesale shipments to the U.S., according to the U.S. government. Guzmán and his operation likely grossed 20% of that--enough for him to have pocketed $1 billion over his career and earn a spot on the billionaires list for the first time.

While others with ten-figure fortunes have criminal records, Guzmán is probably the only one for whom the U.S. government is offering a $5 million reward for his capture. "He clearly is a sociopath and willing to engage in high levels of violence, but he is skillful in managing these turbulent waters," says Bruce Bagley, chairman of international studies at the University of Miami. While traditional drug cartels are built around a family hierarchy, Guzmán's operates more as a confederation of different groups. He hires gangs that have peeled off from competitors, offering attractive profit sharing. "The Sinaloa cartel is kind of a new animal in a way. He offers them a better deal," adds Bagley.

Guzmán grew up in the Pacific coast state of Sinaloa in a rural region that has produced big drug traffickers. The farm boy was likely exposed to the trade at a young age. Officials say he honed his drug-running skills working for different gangs, most notably as an airplane logistics expert for Miguel Angel Félix Gallardo, "El Padrino," or the Godfather, the country's leading trafficker at the time. Gallardo was arrested in 1989.

By the early 1990s Guzmán had started his own international firm. Business didn't always run smoothly. In 1993, at the northern border, Mexican authorities seized a 7-ton shipment of cocaine, believed to be his, that was hidden in chili pepper cans. The same year rival gang members, apparently trying to kill Guzmán at the Guadalajara airport, bumped off a Catholic cardinal instead. Also that year he was captured and convicted for homicide and drug trafficking.

A 1995 U.S. indictment alleges he directed a vast network of employees and assets, including warehouses in California, New Jersey and Chicago; a tunnel, running 65 feet deep and 1,416 feet long, between Mexico and Otay Mesa, Calif.; an executive jet rental business; and railcars carrying cooking oil. At least one of his employees was in charge of paying off Mexican prosecutors and police, allegedly dropping $1 million in cash in 1991 for the release of Guzmán's brother, "El Pollo," from a Mexico City prison. (El Pollo was murdered in 2004.)

How long can Guzmán, who may be in Guatemala, continue to elude authorities? The Mexican government is trying to crack down on the murderous drug trade that has killed 6,000 people in the past year, including Guzmán's son, who was gunned down in May. It has dispatched thousands of soldiers to hot zones. In November it arrested the nation's top antidrug authority for allegedly agreeing to a $450,000-per-month deal to tip off drug traffickers about raids and arrests. That pressure, along with more pressure from rival drug gangs, appears to be making business harder for Guzmán but hasn't persuaded him to get out of the industry

Niners to go with new threads in 09

The 49ers, indeed, will unveil a new -- perhaps old -- look this season. On its web site, the team announced that it would unveil the new uniform in two months: "The team confirmed today that the 49ers will be changing the uniform for the 2009 season. The new design will be presented at the 49ers Draft Day event on April 25. No further details will be released until then."

In the past, Jed York has said he favors the cherry red threads from the early 1980s, the ones the team has worn for "throwback" games twice a year in recent seasons. The team held focus groups early last year to get input from both fans and the players. How closely will the new look resemble the uniforms of yesteryear? We'll find out in April ...

Tom Brady has played his last game as a New England Patriot and will be traded to the San Francisco 49ers, a source with ties to the Patriots organization has told Sportsimproper.com.

According to a Patriots official, the condition of Brady's injured knee
is worse than has been previously reported and will probably require further surgery. As a result, Brady will miss the entire 2009-2010 season. Brady would be 33 at the beginning of the following season (2010-2011) and the Patriots simply cannot wait that long for their superstar quarterback to return to form.
But whether Brady can ever actually help the 49ers on the field is another story.

As reported by Sportsimproper.com last month, two orthopedic surgeons with knowledge of the Brady case stated that due to the nature of the injury and the complications arising from subsequent infections, there was a high probability the quarterback would miss significant time or possibly never play again.

One surgeon said: "If there (was) another infection and the patellar tendon graft (which is used to replace the ACL) is compromised, that could cause him to miss significant time next season. (Besides) it truly takes a year for the ligaments and surrounding muscles to function as a real unit again. Some doctors may suggest six months, but in reality it is a year plus."

Media reports persist the Patriots will place the franchise tag on back-up quarterback Matt Cassel for the 2009 season. That move would open the door for Brady to go to San Francisco.While the idea of Brady playing anywhere but New England may come as a shock to Patriots fans, the Bay Area would be a natural fit for him on many levels.

Brady was born in San Mateo, just outside San Francisco, and wants to end his career, or what's left of it, near his home, the Patriots official indicated. Brady recently purchased property in Brentwood, California, which is just north of San Francisco, and reportedly plans to build a home there.

Further adding to Brady’s roots to the Golden State, his son, John Edward Thomas Moynihan, born in 2007 by actress and ex-girlfriend Bridget Moynihan, lives in California.

If healthy, Brady would give San Francisco the big-name quarterback it has lacked since the days of Joe Montana and Steve Young. The 49ers finished 7-9 this past season, improving slightly from their 5-11 finish in 2007.

Added altogether, said the Patriots official: "(That’s why) he's going to San Francisco."

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (AFP) — Manny Pacquiao punished Oscar de la Hoya for eight rounds, his technical knockout triumph over the US superstar underscoring the Filipino icon's status as best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

Pacquiao's speed and precision were too much for De la Hoya, whose left eye was swelling shut in his battered face as he declined to come out for the ninth round.

The Mexican-American sat quietly on his stool as his corner decided he had taken enough punishment, and referee Tony Weeks officially stopped the fight.

With the technical knockout, Pacquiao improved to 48-3 with two drawn and 36 wins inside the distance.

Pacquiao, the reigning World Boxing Council lightweight champion, moved up two weight classes to take the lucrative bout with De la Hoya, a 10-time world champion in six different weight classes who fell to 39-6 with 30 knockouts.

The disparity in size, most obvious in De la Hoya's four-inch height advantage, proved no handicap for the 29-year-old Pacquiao, who was ahead on all three judges' scorecards when the fight was halted.

Pacquiao was all eagerness from the opening bell, when he raced to the center of the ring buoyed by chants of "Manny! Manny!" from a sizeable contingent of Filipino fans at the MGM Grand.

But the famously aggressive Pacquiao also showed shrewd judgment, darting in to land blows while eluding the sluggish-looking De la Hoya.

"That's what we were working on every day in the gym - speed," Pacquiao said. "Speed was going to be the key to this fight."

"I'm not surprised by the result, because I prepared well to control the fight from the beginning," he said. "I'm happy that I could give this victory to my country."

Pacquiao peppered De la Hoya with punches from the first round, landing quick lefts up the middle as he moved in and out at will.

By the seventh round it was all Pacquiao, as he backed De la Hoya into a corner and landed a series of damaging combinations.

De la Hoya seemed unable to launch a punch and merely tried to cover up.

The eighth was more of the same as Pacquiao handed De la Hoya one of the worst defeats of his career.

Two of the judges gave every round to Pacquiao, while a third gave De la Hoya one round.

De la Hoya, who was at his lightest since 2001, may have been adversely affected by the drop in weight.

"I felt empty, without power," he said. "I tried to go forward but Pacquiao's leg speed and movement didn't allow me to connect with anything."

But De la Hoya was full of praise for his tenacious rival.

"Manny Pacquiao is a great fighter," De la Hoya said. "He deserves all the credit. He fought a great fight. He was the better man."

At 35, De la Hoya was left pondering his future.

"My heart still wants to fight that's for sure," De la Hoya said in a television interview from the ring. "But when your physical doesn't respond, what can you do?"

Pacquiao, meanwhile, had nothing to ponder but his next opponent, perhaps 140-pound light-welterweight draw Ricky Hatton of Britain.

Pacquiao said he would fight whoever promoter Bob Arum put in front of him.

"My job is to train hard and to fight in the ring," he said. "It's my promoter's job to decide who I fight - and I will fight.

Rapper MC Breed dies at friend's home at age 37

It was in the gritty, blue-collar city of Flint that Eric Breed grew up amid the dimming opportunities of a declining auto industry.

That starkness was vivid in the lyrics of what would be the rapper's biggest hit, 1991's "Ain't No Future in Yo' Frontin'."

Breed, known professionally as MC Breed, died Saturday at a friend's home in Ypsilanti, about 30 miles southwest of Detroit, a Washtenaw County medical examiner's spokesman said Monday.

Toxicology reports were pending, but no foul play was suspected in the 37-year-old's death.

Breed had suffered from kidney failure, according to The Detroit News and The Flint Journal.

"More than just an artist, we mourn the loss of a beloved father, son, brother and friend," his family said in a statement. "We are thankful and blessed to have been in his presence and want him to be remembered for his creative, caring, talented and hardworking spirit."

Breed released 13 albums from 1991 to 2004, and collaborated with artists such as Tupac Shakur and Too Short.

He moved to Atlanta in the 1990s, but always identified with his tough Flint roots.

The lyrics from "Ain't No Future in Yo' Frontin'" included: "I'm from F-l-i-n-t'n. A city where pity runs low. If you ever shoot through my city, now you know. Cause we are strictly business and we also got our pride, and if you don't like it, I suggest you break wide."

The single was from his first album, "MC Breed & DFC," which sold between 2.5 million to 4 million copies.

Breed was a "musical legend of Flint," said Carter McWright, owner of local record store Music Planet.

"One thing about Breed is he had that flow, that rhythm," McWright said. "He knew how to flow with it."

Funeral arrangements were being completed Monday in Flint.

Breed is survived by three daughters and two sons; his parents; two brothers; and a sister.

Revenue surge for firearms owners post-election

Gun dealers across Connecticut say they've seen their sales double in the week since Barack Obama was elected.

Gun owners say they fear an Obama administration would make gun control a top priority.

"In the past the Democratic Party has not been terribly friendly to gun owners," said Gary Lemke of Newington Gun Exchange. "President-Elect Obama has stated that he plans to enact restrictions as soon as he possibly can."

Lemke said military-style guns have been hard to keep in stock, since they're the kind most likely to be limited by legislation.

"People are taking the position that it's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it." Lemke added.

The owners of Hoffman's Gun Center in Newington report a similar surge in sales.

"The average American believes that now that the liberal democrats control our entire system of government they will out law them," said Scott Hoffman of Hoffman's Gun Center. "They will put me out of business."

Hoffman said his gun sales have doubled. He expects another rise in customers if and when a law limiting gun sales is proposed.

While some customers appear to be concerned, others aren't rushing to buy a gun.

"We still have a lot of Republicans in the house, so we'll see what we can do with it," said Pat Arrigoni of Rocky Hill.

Henceforth, he will be Tim Lincecum, 2008 National League Cy Young Award winner.

The Giants' brightest light, who only 29 months ago was throwing for the University of Washington, was lounging on his sofa Tuesday morning, watching NFL highlights on TV, when he got the call saying he had become the second San Francisco Giant, and first in 41 years, to win the sport's highest pitching honor.

Mike McCormick, who won in 1967, later offered his congratulations to Lincecum.

Lincecum said he was stunned to learn he had won, not only because he figured Brandon Webb, Johan Santana or CC Sabathia would win, but also by his landslide victory. Lincecum received 23 of 32 first-place votes from members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Webb and Santana, who finished second and third, respectively, each had four first-place votes. Sabathia got the final one and finished fifth, behind Phillies closer Brad Lidge.

Lincecum appeared on every ballot except the one cast by Chris De Luca of the Chicago Sun-Times.

The first word out of Lincecum's mouth when he learned he won was, "Really?"

"I was more shocked than anything," he said. "With the competition, I was just hoping to be in the mix. I was thinking Webb or Santana or even CC had it. As far as that goes, my reaction was, 'Woo hoo!' I literally yelled a couple of times after I got off the phone."

General manager Brian Sabean, who in 2006 took a chance on the pencil-thin pitcher with a whip-like delivery and selected him with the Giants' first pick of the 2006 amateur draft, also seemed taken aback by how easily Lincecum won an award that eluded such stellar Giants as Juan Marichal and Jason Schmidt.

"In Obama-like fashion, it wasn't close," Sabean said. "I wonder what we were worrying about here on the West Coast."

Then, turning to Lincecum at a ballpark news conference, Sabean said, "You certainly were the focus of everything that was good about the Giants this year. The organization has a lot to be proud of because of your individual accolade. ... Your age of innocence is over. A lot is going to be expected of you now."

Lincecum can begin attacking those expectations April 7, when the Giants open the 2009 season at home against Milwaukee. Manager Bruce Bochy left no doubt who will get the ball.

"It's something he earned already," Bochy said. "I'd say, you win the Cy Young, there's a good chance you're the starting pitcher next Opening Day."

Tuesday, however, was not about looking forward, but reflecting upon one of the greatest single-year performances by anyone who has worn a Giants uniform, resulting in a Cy Young win in Lincecum's first full season - a rarity accomplished by a small group of pitchers that included Dwight Gooden, Bret Saberhagen and Fernando Valenzuela.

The writers looked past wins - Webb had 22, Lincecum 18 - and rewarded the Giant for dominating in so many categories, including strikeouts. Lincecum led the majors with 265. Writers surely noted as well that the 72-90 Giants went 22-12 when Lincecum pitched and 50-78 when he did not. Bochy called Lincecum's performance a "silver lining in our season."

Lincecum called his win "a tremendous honor. All those people I was going up against were great pitchers. They've all been Cy Young winners before. Just to be in that elite group, going against past ones, hopefully you can slip by - and that's what happened. You've just got to give yourself a pat on the back. At last that's what I've done."

One of the first people Lincecum called was closer Brian Wilson, who was sitting in a dentist's chair.

"I was screaming when he told me," Wilson said in an e-mail. "I'm not sure if that was a reaction to the drill cutting into my gums because of my overaggressive fist pumping I was displaying on the chair. Like I said before, I knew it was his when he took the mound every start."

"That's great, man. Wow," catcher Bengie Molina said when told of Lincecum's win. "He pitched so great. I'm so happy for him. I'm hoping he enjoys it. I know it's an individual award, but looking back and seeing the year we had as team, for him to come out with Cy Young is amazing. It's unbelievable."

Pitching coach Dave Righetti said the news "sent a chill through me a little bit." Righetti feared for Lincecum's chances after spending a week in New York and hearing nothing but Santana, Santana and more Santana from writers.

"They didn't even mention Timmy," Righetti said. "I didn't bother arguing with them. I said, 'You guys are nuts if you didn't watch these games and what he did the whole year.' I guess a lot of writers did, obviously. They voted him the winner."

More than that, they gave Lincecum a moniker that does not sound as Freaky or Franchise-y or Seabiscuit-y as some of the others.

"As far as living up to that name, Cy Young, it's something I've talked to Mike McCormick about," Lincecum said. "He said forever I'll be known as a Cy Young winner no matter how bad I (do). I guess if I get 20 years down the road and look back on it, I can't say that's a bad thing."

SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- In this live-and-let-live town, where medical marijuana clubs do business next to grocery stores and an annual fair celebrates sadomasochism, prostitutes could soon walk the streets without fear of arrest.

San Francisco would become the first major U.S. city to decriminalize prostitution if voters next month approve Proposition K, a measure that forbids local authorities from investigating, arresting or prosecuting anyone for selling sex.

The ballot question technically would not legalize prostitution, since state law still prohibits it, but the measure would eliminate the power of local law enforcement officials to go after prostitutes.

Proponents say the measure will free up $11 million the police spend each year arresting prostitutes and allow them to form collectives.

"It will allow workers to organize for our rights and for our safety," said Patricia West, 22, who said she has been selling sex for about a year by placing ads on the Internet. She moved to San Francisco in May from Texas to work on Proposition K.

Even in tolerant San Francisco, where the sadomasochism fair draws thousands of tourists and a pornographic video company is housed in a former armory, the measure faces an uphill battle, with much of the political establishment opposing it.

Some form of prostitution is legal in two states. Brothels are allowed in rural counties in Nevada. And Rhode Island permits the sale of sex behind closed doors between consulting adults, but it prohibits street prostitution and brothels.

In 2004, almost two-thirds of voters in nearby Berkeley rejected decriminalization. But proponents of Proposition K say their proposal has a better shot in San Francisco, which they believe is more sexually liberal than the city across the bay.

After all, the world's oldest profession has long been established here. During the Gold Rush, the neighborhood closest to the piers was a seedy pleasure center of sex, gambling and drinking known as the Barbary Coast.

These days, on certain corners, prostitutes sell their bodies day and night, ducking into doorways and alleys when police pass. One recent afternoon in the Mission District, six prostitutes were plying their trade on a single block.

Police made 1,583 prostitution arrests in 2007 and expect to make a similar number this year. But the district attorney's office says most defendants are fined, placed in diversion programs or both. Fewer than 5 percent get prosecuted for solicitation, which is a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail.

Proposition K has been endorsed by the local Democratic Party. But the mayor, the district attorney, the police department and much of the business community oppose the idea. They contend that it would increase street prostitution, allow pimps the run of neighborhoods and hamper the fight against sex trafficking, which would remain illegal because it involves forcing people into the sex trade.

The San Francisco Chronicle editorialized against the measure, saying it could make the city a magnet for prostitution.

If the proposal passes, "we wouldn't be able to investigate prostitution, and it's going to be pretty difficult for us to locate these folks who are victims of trafficking otherwise," said Capt. Al Pardini, head of the police department's vice unit. "It's pretty rare that we get a call that says, 'I'm a victim of human trafficking' or 'I suspect human trafficking in my neighborhood.' "

The proposition would also prohibit police from accepting federal or state funds for sex trafficking investigations that involve racial profiling. Such investigations often arise from raids on brothels that advertise as Asian massage parlors.

"We feel that repressive policies don't help trafficking victims and that human rights-based approaches, including decriminalization, are actually more effective," said Carol Leigh, co-founder of the Bay Area Sex Workers Advocacy Network and a longtime advocate for prostitutes' rights.

But San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris said the ballot question mistakenly assumes that prostitution is a victimless crime.

"The crime of prostitution does not exist by itself," Harris said. "Along with it come pimps, johns and other crimes that really impact the safety of neighborhoods."

If the measure passes, supporters say, prostitutes would not feel the need for pimps as protection. But opponents insist that it would embolden pimps who trap drug addicts into prostitution by plying them with drugs.

"The proponents usually paint a fairly rosy picture of two consenting adults and a monetary exchange at the end," Pardini said. "They don't factor in the people that are being exploited and people that are being controlled, the ones manipulated both physically and chemically."

10. Eric Mangini (Jets): That whole Mangenious thing got old pretty quick didn't it? The Jets surprised everyone with a 10-6 record in Mangini's first season but last year things evened out a bit when the team fell the 4-12. Mangini's boring brand out football made the Jets a tough watch...well until the traded for whats his name. Can Brett Favre save the Jets and Mangini?

9. Gary Kubiak (Texans): This one comes as a shock to me. I really thought Kubiak would get the Texans to the playoffs. He still might. But he is 0-4 right now and he has failed to turn Matt Schaub into the franchise QB they hoped he would be when they gave him all that money. The Texans have gone 6-10 and 8-8 in his first two seasons. With the Hurricane Ike screwing with the team early on, maybe 04 is an aberation. So you still have time to get off the list Gary.

8. Brad Childress (Vikings): Any coach who gives Tavaris Jackson a starting QB job automatically makes this list. The Vikings stole a game in New Orleans to avoid a 1-4 start. If they don't turn it around he could be gone at the end of the season. Great mustache though. Really very 80's.

7. Herm Edwards (Chiefs): You play to win the game! Really coach? Considering the Jets almost packed your bags for you when the Chiefs, for whatever reason, tabbed you to replace Dick Vermeil. He hasn't had much to work with in KC and it shows with a 14-23 record thus far. Still, you reach a 9.9 on the unintentional comedy scale Herm. For that alone I hope you stay around.

6. Romeo Crennel (Browns): I am of the belief that the Browns got lucky in 2007. They are not a 10-6 football team and Crennel is not a very good head coach. Even with 2007 he is 21-31 with Cleveland. Tough part for Cleveland fans is that Phil Savage gave Romeo an extension after his 10-6 mirage. One year does not make a coach.

5. Any Raiders Coach: Your owner is completely insane. Good luck Tom Cable...whoever you are. Since their 2002 Superbowl team, Raiders coaches are a combined 20-64! Maybe that's why Al Davis is nuts!

4. Marvin Lewis (Bengals): From the constant influx of troubled players to underachieving every year, Marvin Lewis has never lived up to the promise many thought he showed as defensive coordinator. Plus, I'm going on record as saying defensive coordinators for the Ravens don't count. Whoever they put in there does well. I have to think it has more to do with Ray Lewis and the boys then it does the coordinator.

3. Jim Haslett (Rams): I understand wanting to fire Scott Linehan who may be the worst head coach this league has seen in a while. But replacing him with Jim Haslett? I know! Lets fire our coach and promote our defensive coordinator whose defense is historically bad. In Jim's defense (no pun intended) he did coach the Saints to solid mediocrity in the early 2000's.

2. Rod Marinelli (Lions): I legitimately feel bad for Lion's fans. How much was Matt Millen's poor decision making and how much has been Marinelli? He's 10-26 as a head coach. He has to take some of the blame. Why have you stayed with Jon Kitna so long?

1. Mike Nolan (49ers): Terrible game planning? Check. Throwing your players under the bus? Check. Terrible clock management? Check. Declining a holding call to set up a 3rd and 1 instead of a 2nd and 11 for the other team? Check (yes that actually happened against TB last season). Mike Nolan is a salesman. He somehow convinced 49er owner John York to hire him as head coach and give him complete control over the team even though he had zero experience in either department. He drafted a QB from a gimmick, spread college offense and made him the center piece of a team that was built (at least attempted to be built)to win with conservative offense and good defense. He then threw that quarterback under the bus when he tried to play with a should injury so bad that it has kept him out for the 2007 and 2008 seasons. This "defensive specialist" has spent millions on free agent defenders only to have a squad that is a mismosh of 3-4 and 4-3 players struggling to find an identity. The team has lacked a pass rush as Nolan refuses to stray from his vanilla schemes. Week after week, he tells the press that the schemes were right but the players didn't execute, refusing to take blame for the utter mess he has created by the bay. The 49ers were 16-32 in is first 3 seasons. He should have been fired last season but 49er fans have been made to suffer 1 more year.

Rumor has it that the San Francisco 49ers could have interest in acquiring Bengals WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

According to a source, Houshmandzadeh’s name has come up quite frequently during conversation at Niners headquarters in recent weeks. Apparently, 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz is enamored with Houshmandzadeh and may have learned some positive things about the receiver from a member of the Zampese family who Martz remains close to.

The 49ers are looking to upgrade the receiver position opposite veteran Isaac Bruce and are expected to do so by the trading deadline. The acquisition of Houshmandzadeh would provide the team with more firepower in the passing game.

According to the source, the Niners organization is also expected to make contact with the Detroit Lions regarding the availability of receiver Roy Williams, who has been the subject of trade talk for months.

Houshmandzadeh’s agent Kennard McGuire did not return a phone call seeking comment.

BET gives 'Rap City' the heave-ho

The beat is ending at BET's "Rap City," the longrunning video program that finally helped vault hip-hop music into the popular mainstream.

The network confirmed Wednesday it will replace "Rap City" with a new show, "The Deal," starting Nov. 10.

A farewell episode is planned for "Rap City," which launched in September 1989. There was speculation yesterday it could run Oct. 29, but a network source said no date has been set.

While "Rap City" has drifted over the last three years, frequently changing hosts and time slots, it remains one of the media pillars on which rap's current popularity was built.

"'Rap City' is a legendary program that has been crucial in creating awareness for hip-hop music videos that were tailored for the core rap fan," said Ebro Darden, program director of WQHT (97.1 FM).

Hot-97 didn't switch to a full-time hip-hop format - the first in the country- until four years after "Rap City" went on the air.

"The Deal," which will be hosted by deejay Diamond Kutz, also will be a music show focusing on hip hop. It will be an hour long and continue several themes from "Rap City," including the popular "Pop-Up Video" segment.

"Rap City" was considered a risky notion when it debuted, because hip-hop music was under fire for its "gangsta rap" controversy and there was fear the genre was too angry and harsh to become part of the mainstream.

But "Rap City" and its original host, "The Mayor" Chris Thomas, quickly became one of the network's most popular shows, and a must-visit destination for popular and aspiring rap artists.

Over the years, almost every major rapper visited "Rap City," which was considered edgier than its slightly older rival, the late "Yo! MTV Raps."

In addition to videos, "Rap City" also featured freestyle and guest deejay segments.

Some fans feel the golden age for "Rap City" was 1994-1999, when Joe Clair and Big Lez cohosted.

But the freestyle era brought another boost after Big Tigger took over as host in September 1999 and the show was renamed "Rap City: Tha Basement." In Tigger's "freestyle booth," guest artists would improvise vocals on the set.

Niners QB Smith has broken shoulder, won't play this season

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Alex Smith's season is over with another shoulder injury. The high-priced quarterback's short career with the San Francisco 49ers is probably finished as well.

The 49ers put Smith on injured reserve Wednesday with a broken bone in his right shoulder. The top pick in the 2005 draft probably will require more surgery on the joint that limited him to seven games last season.

Details of Smith's shoulder injury were first reported Saturday by ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Coach Mike Nolan improbably claimed to know little about the injury that ended his former franchise quarterback's fourth NFL campaign before Smith even played in a regular-season game this fall. Smith's teammates expressed more concern than their gruff coach over his latest injury, which popped up during the club's final practice before last week's season opener.

"I feel sorry for him," said running back Frank Gore, the Niners' third-round pick in Smith's draft. "He was a great teammate and worked hard. I just hope the best for him, and hope he gets well."

After paying Smith more than $31 million during his four years with the 49ers, the bleak realities of NFL salary cap life mean the club is likely to release him before next season. General manager Scot McCloughan said last week that San Francisco can't risk paying $9 million in base salary to a backup quarterback in 2009.

Smith lost his starting job to journeyman J.T. O'Sullivan in training camp.

"I'm not going to answer any hypothetical questions about the future," said Nolan, who had an embarrassing public spat with Smith last year over the severity of the quarterback's shoulder injury. "We'll cross that bridge when we get there. My focus right now is on [Sunday's game against] Seattle."

Smith refused to comment after practice, and didn't respond to an additional request for comment Wednesday afternoon.

Smith had surgery on his shoulder in December to repair three torn ligaments, the product of a separated shoulder from a game in late September 2007. He attempted to play through pain after the injury, but obviously struggled in all three games, culminating in an awful effort in a 24-0 loss at Seattle.

"I thought he wasn't ready to go," said Seahawks linebacker Julian Peterson, Smith's former teammate in San Francisco. "I thought he just tried to tough it out for the team, and it really wasn't a smart move for the team and for himself. He tried to do it for the team, and wasn't really ready."

After several months of rehabilitation, Smith appeared to be at full strength in training camp despite losing his job to O'Sullivan, who was quicker to pick up new offensive coordinator Mike Martz's system. But Smith experienced severe pain in his shoulder last Friday while making a long throw during practice, and subsequent tests found a significant problem.

Dr. James Andrews, who performed Smith's last surgery, apparently confirmed the team's diagnosis of a broken bone in Smith's shoulder, though the quarterback and the team still don't know how it happened.

The 49ers signed 38-year-old Jamie Martin, a veteran of Martz's system who was out of football, to back up O'Sullivan and Shaun Hill.

"He worked so hard to get back, and then to have this happen to him now is so unfortunate," said Hill, who backed up Smith along with Trent Dilfer for the past two seasons. "Obviously, it's not an easy thing for him. Even last year, Trent and I were excited for what he was going to do. ... I don't think he's a bust at all. Injuries hampered him."

Smith passed for 4,679 yards with 31 interceptions and 19 touchdowns in his first three seasons with the 49ers, who selected the former Utah star with the first draft pick of Nolan's regime. He left the Utes one year early to capitalize on the excitement of their undefeated season under coach Urban Meyer, and he was rewarded with $24 million in guaranteed money as the No. 1 pick in a notoriously weak draft with no clear-cut top selections.

Smith went 11-19 as a starter, never finding a consistent NFL groove while playing for four offensive coordinators in four seasons and throwing to one of the league's worst collections of receivers. San Francisco's offense finished last in the NFL in 2005 and 2007, with Smith receiving a share of the blame even though he played only part of his rookie season and missed most of 10 games last year.

In 2006, his only full season as a starter, Smith took every snap and posted respectable numbers for offensive coordinator Norv Turner while the 49ers went 7-9. Turner then left to become San Diego's head coach.

Of all the terms you could use to describe Alex Smith's NFL adventure so far, there is one term that is truly best avoided.

Bust.

Smith is no bust. He might be playing Clipboard Guy to J.T. O'Sullivan, but he's no bust. A disappointment to this date, sure. A frustration, certainly, assuming your view of things begins and ends around Candlestick Point. A mystery, perhaps, if one hasn't been paying close attention to the ways in which Smith's career has been made to spin sideways.

But a bust? Not here, and absolutely not now. Smith is still just 24 years old. Strong arm, though not always accurate. Good head, though a tendency to over-intellectualize. Honest guy, though that'll get you in trouble in the NFL if you get carried away with the whole truth-telling thing.

In short, Smith remains an imperfect (but useful) product in a professional league that is made up almost entirely of flawed (but useful) products. He'll deliver for someone, and it won't take forever -- as long as that someone isn't the 49ers. The sooner San Francisco moves Smith, the sooner he can get on with the NFL career he's supposed to have.

Smith is, of course, responsible himself for some of what he's dealing with in his fourth season since being taken with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft -- a turn of events that led to his signing a contract that included $24 million in guaranteed bonus money, in case the previous 45,000 mentions of his bank account this month somehow slipped your notice.

The intervening years have been ones of hope, followed by perplexity, followed by the usual rush to figure out whom to blame for the fact that Smith didn't take this ragtag franchise by the scruff of the neck and lead it to glory.

Truth is, Alex Smith is no savior -- and never was. His No. 1 status, like some other No. 1s over the years, was a fluke, owing to the simple fact that the 49ers had to draft a quarterback in '05. The franchise narrowed its choice to Smith and Aaron Rodgers and took Smith. Even back then, his college coach at Utah, Urban Meyer, said it would take awhile for Smith to shake off Meyer's tricked-up offensive scheme and learn the NFL way of things.

Well, let's talk about that for a minute. Four years later, Smith is on his fourth offensive coordinator in San Francisco, from Mike McCarthy to Norv Turner to Jim Hostler and, now, Mike Martz. The quarterback who will start for the 49ers this season, O'Sullivan, came into camp having spent all last year learning Martz's system in Detroit. One can argue Smith ought to be able to rise above such mundane matters as who is drawing up the plays in the dirt, but that's not the reality of the NFL.

The reality, in fact, isn't kind to the 49ers and head coach Mike Nolan from any angle where Smith is concerned. Top pick or no top pick, Nolan rushed Smith into the job as a rookie, promoting him over Tim Rattay after a 1-3 start. Smith's reward? His first NFL start, against the Indianapolis Colts, who came into the game with one of the best defenses in the league. Four interceptions and a fumble later: Welcome to the show, kid.

It went like that. McCarthy left for Green Bay after year one, replaced by Turner, under whom Smith had his best season to date. Turner promptly left to become the Chargers' head coach, and Nolan, with the blessing of the front office, brought in the unproven Hostler to replace him. Hostler was promptly ditched after a single, disastrous season, yet somehow Smith is the one on the hook for the damage.

It's easy to forget Smith's 58 percent completion average under Turner in 2006, especially in light of the gear-stripping year of '07. Again, look at the role the 49ers played in this debacle. Smith limped out of the gate, trying to make Hostler's anemic system work on offense. Nolan, already feeling the pressure of a third-year coach who hadn't achieved a franchise turnaround, just had no patience on any level.

When Smith separated his shoulder, Nolan tried to say it was no big deal. Even as neutral observers could easily spot Smith sailing passes that he'd never missed before, Nolan essentially implied that Smith wasn't tough enough to handle the usual in-season injuries that all players face. Smith made things infinitely worse by answering truthfully reporters' questions about his condition, admitting his shoulder was "killing" him, and thus violating Rule No. 1 in the locker room (don't tell a reporter anything, ever).

The team wanted Smith to rehab the injury, clearly underestimating its severity. Smith didn't finally have surgery until December, a ridiculous mistake. Fault Smith for not simply taking over and going for the surgery himself sooner; he tried to play it the 49ers' way, and he lost.

The question of whether Smith will ever be a dominator is something else again. It's mostly silly, but it comes with the territory of being the top draft pick and being paid by the duffel bags full of cash. Smith ultimately is the guardian of his own career, a lesson he undoubtedly has learned several times over while going through the meat-grinder of the NFL life in San Francisco.

But a bust? It's way too early in the game for that. What Smith needs is a new zip code, not a gold watch.

Indonesia beats China for gold in badminton

BEIJING (AP)—Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia have won the gold medal in men’s doubles at the Olympic badminton tournament, defeating China’s Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng in three sets.

Top-seeded Kido and Setiawan recovered from a shaky start on their way to a 12-21, 21-11, 21-16 win Saturday over the second-seeded Chinese pair at Beijing University of Technology Gymnasium.

It was Indonesia’s first gold medal of the games and second medal on Saturday at the badminton tournament. Maria Kristin Yulianti won the bronze medal in women’s singles.

After Setiawan made a cross-court backhand just out of the reach of Cai to win the match, the Indonesians embraced before being tackled by their coach.
